Microneedling, also known as Collagen Induction Therapy, is a great therapy I offer in my NW Calgary Naturopathic Medicine practice. This technique uses tiny needles to puncture the skin in order to stimulate the production of collagen and elastin in the face, and stimulates the skins ability to regenerate and renew. This treatment is most commonly used for wrinkles, crowfeet, laugh lines, acne and acne scars, sagging skin, and much more. Benefits include skin that is more tight and smooth, a more even skin tone, reduction in size of pores, and skin that appears more youthful and healthy.
How does Microneedling work?
By creating tiny punctures in the skin, your body begins a healing process that results in skin looking rejuvenated. Blood flow is increased to your skin and collagen and elastin production is stimulated. In addition, substances such as hyaluronic acid are more easily absorbed into deeper layers of your skin because of the channels that have opened up via the tiny punctures.
What can Microneedling treat?
- Stretch marks
- Acne and acne scarring
- Surgical scars, or scars of any origin
- Wrinkles and fine lines, Crowsfeet, laugh lines
- Chicken pox scars
- Drooping and sagging skin (lack of firmness on the face or body)
- Age spots and sun damage
- Under eye circles and puffiness, bags under the eyes
- Hyper pigmentation
- Visible pores
What can I expect during a Microneedling treatment?
The treatments are very relaxing and last about one hour. First your face will be cleansed with a gentle cleanser to remove any make up and debris. Then a numbing cream will be applied to your face and left on for approximately 20 minutes. After 20 minutes the cream will be washed off and your face will be swabbed gently with alcohol to ensure it is clean. Next, solutions including vitamins and nutrients (such as hyaluronic acid) will be applied to your face and the microneedling procedure will begin. Dr. Ramona will do your entire face but especially focus on your problem areas, which you will have discussed prior to your treatment. The needling portion of the treatment will take approximately 20 minutes. Next, Dr. Ramona will cleanse your face with a cool wet cloth, and apply a lotion containing nutrients. She will provide you with after care instructions for after your treatment. Your next treatment will be scheduled in 3 to 6 weeks, depending on the depth and intensity of the treatment you just had done. You will need anywhere from 4 to 8 treatments depending on the concerns you are looking to treat.
What can I expect after my treatment?
After your treatment it is very common for the skin to feel tight and dry, so it’s very important to apply to solution Dr. Ramona gives you often. Redness (it will look like you have a slight sunburn) on your face should subside in approximately 2 days, and your skin may peel for a few days. Be sure to follow the guidelines Dr. Ramona provides you with for after treatment care. Results will be visible 1 to 2 weeks after your treatment, and will continue to improve over the next 4 to 6 weeks.
