Treating Psoriasis with Naturopathic Medicine

Psoriasis is a condition I have treated often in the past 10 years in my NW Calgary Naturopathic Medicine practice. This skin condition is characterized by red plaques that are covered with silver/white scales, which are formed by a more rapid than normal multiplication of skin cells. These lesions can be itchy and painful, and sometimes can bleed. These lesions can be seen anywhere on the body but are most frequently seen on the elbows and knees, or the scalp. Flares of psoriasis tend to come and go, and is linked to an immune system that is functioning abnormally. There are multiple causes for flares of psoriasis but in my practice I see that stress is a very significant contributor. Keep reading to learn about the treatment options that Naturopathic Medicine has to offer patients suffering from this frustrating and painful skin condition.

Food sensitivity testing for Psoriasis

Psoriasis is often linked to the health of the digestive system, and the immune system reacting inappropriately to certain food antigens. By testing for an IgG response to foods, we can eliminate the foods that come back positive for creating a reaction with the immune system. In this manner we can reduce the the hyperstimulation of the immune system which is contributing to Psoriasis. Once these foods are eliminated we can do some work to support the overall health of the digestive system and the immune system. I have had great success with food sensitivity testing in the treatment of this condition. You can read more about Food sensitivity testing here.

Vitamins and Supplements

Once I have taken a complete health history for a patient I can prescribe professional grade supplements to support them. These can help to support digestion and heal the skin, as well play a role in the body’s stress response. They can also help to balance the immune system. You can read more about professional grade supplements here.

Botanical medicine and Herbs

This form of medicine is important in the treatment of Psoriasis. Herbs are very useful in stress management, modulating the immune system, supporting the skin and the liver, and healing the digestive system. You can read more about Botanical medicine and Herbs here.

Stress management

As stated above, stress and emotions play a very significant role in the development of Psoriasis as well as the flare ups. It is important for the patient to have methods of dealing with stress, whether that is yoga, exercise, meditation, or a good support system to talk to. You can read more about stress management here.

Acupuncture

This is also a powerful tool for treating psoriasis. Acupuncture can impact digestion, stress, sleep, and overall well-being. You can read more about acupuncture here.

There is so much that Naturopathic Medicine has to offer in the treatment of Psoriasis. Overall we want to support the patient because this condition can impact each patient individually, and the root cause can be unique for every patient.
