Restless Legs Calgary

Treating Restless Legs Syndrome with Naturopathic Medicine

Restless Legs is a symptom I see in quite a few patients in my NW Calgary Naturopathic Medicine practice. It can be very uncomfortable and can disrupt one’s sleep, and therefore energy levels and overall quality of life.

Restless Legs Syndrome causes uncomfortable sensations in a patients legs, that makes them want to move their legs to stop the sensation. It tends to be the worst at night, when the patient is relaxing or lying in bed before falling asleep. The sensation can be described as a crawling, prickling, itching, pins and needles type of feeling.

Certain conditions can make you more prone to developing Restless Legs Syndrome, such as iron deficiency, pregnancy, nerve damage, and kidney failure. Genetics can also play a role in the development of this condition.

Naturopathic Medicine can play a role in treatment, so keep reading below to find out what the options are!

Vitamins and Supplements for Restless Legs Syndrome

There tend to be a few vitamins that I have had good success with in my patients, and these can be determined based on my patients health history and other symptoms (such as high stress, poor sleep, hot flashes, etc). I only prescribe Iron in patients that are actually determined to be iron deficient via blood test. I will look at a variety of supplements to see what fits best and to ensure there are no interactions with any medications the patient is on. You can read more about Professional Grade Supplements here.

B12 injections

A B12 deficiency can sometimes be linked to Restless Legs, so a blood test can be done to determine if a B12 deficiency is present. You can read more about the benefits of B12 injections here.

Bowen Therapy

This therapy can help with overall aches and pains, sports injuries, muscle tension and tightness, and overall relaxation. This therapy involves gentle touch over muscles, tendons and ligaments to heal injuries and promote overall relaxation. You can read more about Bowen Therapy here.

Lifestyle

Managing stress, having a relaxing routine before bedtime, massage therapy, yoga, regular exercise, minimizing alcohol, smoking and caffeine can all play a role in reducing restless legs.

As you can see there are quite a few options that Naturopathic Medicine has to offer in the treatment of Restless Legs Syndrome, and there is no need to suffer. Please do not hesitate to contact me at my NW Calgary Naturopathic Medicine practice if you have any questions about what treatment could be right for you!
